Orbit, A Symphonic Fantasy

Every two years, the Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition treats Flagstaff to a month-long series of mostly free events that celebrate the night sky and the impact it has on us. The Celebration of the Night, which runs this year from September 20 to October 29, "is anchored by the NightVisions exhibition at the Coconino Center for the Arts, an exhibition which explores and celebrates the beauty, mystery, and inspiration of the night and star-filled skies as illuminated through art, literature, and scientific endeavor."

Musicians and composers, too, have long been inspired by the night sky, and Orchestra Northern Arizona is pleased to offer a musical tribute to them, Music of the Night, on October 18, as part of the Dark Skies event.

In what is a unique opportunity, ONA has invited noted composer Karim Elmahmoudi to Flagstaff for a special performance of his original composition, Orbit, A Symphonic Fantasy. The piece, which premiered in Los Angeles in 2012, now plays hourly at the California Science Center, which houses the Space Shuttle Endeavour.

In addition to his presence at the ONA concert, Mr. Elmahmoudi will visit local schools to talk about how the night sky impacts his work, and he will participate in a reception at Lowell Observatory on Sunday, October 19.

Mark your calendars now for this very special ONA presentation.
